They found her in a basket one cold night outside the big tent.

"She's double-jointed!" one exclaimed. They took it as a sign. They'd raise her as their own.

I read this to a co-worker here at the library. She smiled and said, "I want to know what happens!" We are surrounded by books that don't make us say that in spite of 100,000 words, let alone 50.
